New York to Host “Shelter by Afternoon Light” Design Fair in May

Prime Highlights:

“Shelter by Afternoon Light,” an invitation-only design show, debuts in May 2025 during NYC Design Week with over 100 furniture and décor companies.

The event is a collaborative effort between the owners of AndMore and Afternoon Light with the vision of becoming New York Design Week’s anchor.

Key Background:

New York City will be welcoming a new design trade show, “Shelter by Afternoon Light,” in May of 2025, as part of NYC Design Week. The three-day show will present over 100 of the world’s top furniture and décor brands, including globally graded companies such as Carl Hansen & Son, BD Barcelona, Tom Dixon, and Yamazaki Home. Focused towards trade professionals as well as general visitors, the fair will offer visitors a tangible experience of the world of new design and innovation.

The firm is owned by Deirdre Maloney and Minya Quirk, two experienced businesswomen who have also formerly started design-driven businesses. They had formerly launched fashion brand Capsule together before co-founding Shoppe Object in 2018 with Aesthetic Movement’s Jesse James. Their latest venture, Afternoon Light, was launched in 2022 and is an online boutique with carefully curated designs from leading brands.

This highly anticipated event is being constructed in partnership with AndMore, a Blackstone-backed company running large markets like the Atlanta Market, Las Vegas Market, and parts of High Point Market. The organizers, working together, will craft an event that draws on the elements of trade shows, art fairs, markets, and collectible design exhibitions.

The event would be one that would be the highlight of NYC Design Week, with learning moments, business growth, and networking around it. Maloney stated that their approach for the design sector is one of differentiation and experiential-building that would reshuffle the industry. She added that years of working with legacy models would now be shifting focus to events that bring together business, community, and creativity.

With a well-chosen cast picked by hand and passionate industry backing, “Shelter by Afternoon Light” will be one to watch in the design world, offering up-and-coming and established labels the opportunity to show their latest collections.
