Boring Company to Develop 17-Kilometre Transport Tunnel in Dubai

Prime Highlights:

Elon Musk’s Boring Company receives approval to build a 17-kilometre transport tunnel in Dubai.

The project is a partnership with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai, with a pilot tunnel set to launch in the first phase.

Key Background:

Elon Musk’s infrastructure firm, The Boring Company, has been granted approval to construct the Dubai Loop, a groundbreaking 17-kilometre transport tunnel designed to connect various parts of the city with electric vehicles traveling at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

The announcement was made by Musk via video call during the 2025 World Governments Summit in Dubai, where he outlined the project’s potential to revolutionize urban transport. The Boring Company has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai, marking the start of the Dubai Loop initiative. The first phase of this ambitious plan involves the construction of a pilot tunnel, featuring 11 stations designed to transport over 20,000 passengers per hour.

Musk described the tunnel system as “like a wormhole,” emphasizing how passengers would travel seamlessly from one point in the city to another in mere minutes. He highlighted the system’s efficiency, with speeds up to 100 miles per hour dramatically reducing travel times across key areas of Dubai.

The Dubai Loop will utilize electric vehicles, contributing to the city’s sustainability objectives, in alignment with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050. The Boring Company aims to eventually expand the tunnel network to cover the wider Dubai emirate, with the goal of transporting over 100,000 passengers per hour.

The Dubai Loop is inspired by The Boring Company’s previous success in Las Vegas, where the Loop system operates at a top speed of 40 miles per hour, shuttling passengers between stations at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Dubai project is expected to be a key part of the city’s broader transportation and infrastructure goals, which also include the development of the world’s greenest highway and extensive pedestrian walkways. A ceremonial signing of the agreement took place at the World Governments Summit, attended by Dubai ruler Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, marking a major milestone in the project’s development.
