Key Background
The BIG Architecture Festival 2025, run by Zavod BIG as part of the BIG SEE platform, is proving to be a benchmark event for architecture and design in South-Eastern Europe. Held at the culturally significant Grando venue in Portorož, Slovenia, the festival was set up as a series of deep reflection and discussion on the future of architecture during the era of global transformation.
This year’s worldwide conference carries the theme “Common Sense / Space / Responsibility… in Architecture” and aims at tackling the most pressing issues to confront the profession today. Issues will vary from climate-resilient city planning and circular building practices to morally using AI during architectural design. Inspirational speakers such as Melike Altinisik, Shicong Cao, and Martin Rauch will present their diversified experiences and solutions, inspiring context-sensitive, inclusive, and sustainable design philosophies.
Aside from the conference, the festival will also conduct a series of specific debates regarding regional urban policies, design strategy thinking in the digital age, and the way architecture can be a solution to shifting socio-economic trends. The debates will include discussions about how South-East Europe experts can gain greater voice in international stage events such as the Venice Architecture Biennale and World Expos.
In addition to the intellectual challenge, the event includes the “SEE the Future” exhibition, displaying innovative architectural responses by seasoned experts and future students. Visitors also get to see a trade fair with over 100 exhibitors displaying the latest in building materials and technologies. Closing the festival will be the BIG SEE Architecture and Interior Design Awards, awarding outstanding work that produces improved, more sustainable environments. Registration is free for invited participants, with web access provided for wider engagement.
